Commonly Asked Questions:

What does Cary Academy look for in a prospective student?

Cary Academy looks for a student who can contribute to the school community as well as benefit from it. While students must meet minimum entrance requirements, Cary Academy also values a diverse student body with unique talents and interests. Numerous factors are considered when considering prospective students. Our student body comes from all over the Triangle – 50% from Cary, 30% from Raleigh, and 10% from Durham, as well as from cities such as Apex, Chapel Hill, Sanford, and Smithfield. Minority students constitute 15-17% of the student body. Of our students, 72% came to Cary Academy from public schools and 28% from other independent schools.

How much is tuition?

Tuition is competitive with that of other independent schools in the Triangle Area. For the 2005-2006 school year, tuition per year is $13,775 for Upper School and Middle School students. Financial Aid is also available; about 17% of our students receive some type of Financial Aid. The school does not offer any merit-based scholarships.

What are the class sizes? Will my student receive one-on-one time with his or her teacher?

Class sizes range from 8-20 students. In addition to interacting with teachers during class, students have the opportunity to participate in sports and clubs and become more acquainted with faculty members. Teachers are also available after school and during free periods for help with homework and other assignments. All students have an advisor whom they see regularly in Advisory. This advisor gets to know the student on a personal level and is a ready advocate of the student.

How do I begin the Admissions process?

The Admissions process begins in the fall for the following school year. The first consideration deadline is in January. You should start by requesting information and an application from the school. Materials required for admission are: application, applicant questionnaire, parent questionnaire, admissions testing, transcript of grades, recommendation forms, student interview, and student visit.
