Upper School
The yellow tape stretches around the bushes, sagging slightly in the middle. Small, white numbered cards sit propped against casings on the ground. Students, heads bent, scan the area intently, searching for clues, making notes of anything found. Crime scene? No. But a teaching scene? Absolutely.
In innovative classes like forensic science, Upper School students do more than just crack the spine of a book or type notes into their tablet PCs. Dedicated teachers and motivated students work together in a highly interactive and collaborative learning environment that inspires inquiry and an enduring love of learning. In anatomy class, students build a complete skeleton from a jumble of unattached bones; in architecture class, groups of students design a completely functioning "green" building; debaters break off into Russian and American sides to relive the nuclear test ban treaty talks of 1963; and math students model non-Euclidean theories of geometry. The world language program includes an exchange in the sophomore year in which students both host and visit students from our sister schools in Europe, Latin America and China. An extensive fine and performing arts program further broadens students' horizons and lets them discover new talents. Leadership and service opportunities also abound.
In short, the Upper School provides a caring and supportive atmosphere in which students can safely explore and grow while developing the academic and social skills needed for college and the world beyond.
