At the FRC robotics competition at UNC Pembroke this past weekend, the CA team finished with a record of 8-4 and in sixth place (out of 36 teams) after preliminary competition. They lost in the quarterfinals playoff but are already contemplating adjustments to their robot for the second tournament of the year on March 30-31 in Winston-Salem. On Feb 18, two Upper School students participated the NC Eastern Regional All-State Orchestra Clinic. There were 43 schools and 235 musicians playing for symphony and string orchestras. Sarah Russell, music instructor at Providence Day School and Dr. Rebecca MacLeod, Associate Professor of Music Education at UNC Greensboro, conducted.
Jessica Zhong ('20) earned 2nd Chair (out of 22) in the first violin section in Symphony orchestra.
Amy Liu ('21) earned 6th chair (out of 26) in the second violin section in Stringed orchestra.

Congratulations to both CA swim teams on a terrific performance at the State Meet in Greensboro Monday.
The girls dominated on their way to a second consecutive State Championship. The Charger girls scored 349 points while the runner up team, Charlotte Latin, was 112 points behind at 237. The boys finished as State Runners-Up to a very talented Charlotte Latin boys team.
The girls started the meet at a school record setting pace, literally, in the Medley Relay with Nisma Said, Amy Chang, Charlotte Hook and Helen Chen. Senior Ben Humphries finished his swimming career breaking school records in both of his individual events, the 100 Free and 50 Free. The 50 Free, was an 18-year-old record held by Phillip Barish – and earned Ben state champion status. Izzy Barnette reset her 100 yard Freestyle record and a multitude of Relay records fell by the wayside including the girls 200 yard Freestyle Relay (Elena Zayas, Isabella Barnette, Emma Zayas, Charlotte Hook) and 400 Yard Free Relay (Helen Chen, Emma Zayas, Nisma Said and Isabella Barnette). However, The bittersweet moment came in the boys 200 Freestyle Relay with Will Newman, Vincent Wang, Ben Humphries and Josh Pullen. They set a new school and STATE MEET RECORD — only to place 2nd by .07 seconds thereby never really holding the record.
Other Medalists of the Meet:
Eighth grader Charlotte Hook, finished 2nd overall in BOTH of her individual events, the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly and broke the long time IM record held by Bryttany Curran.
The following placed 3rd; Nisma Said (100 Fly), Josh Pullen (50 Free), Jack Todd (500 Free) and Amy Chang (100 Breaststroke). Nisma also set a CA 100 yard backstroke record.
Girls 200 Medley Relay (state champs), 200 Free Relay (2nd place) and 400 Free Relay (3rd place)
Boys 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay (Wang, Pullen, Todd and Humphries) finished 2nd in both events

The CA wrestling team finished 4th at the State Tournament held this weekend, the highest team placement in CA's history.
Chapman Fitzgerald ('18), Joe McDarris ('18), Julian Sodano ('18) and Christian Sodano ('19) return home as State Champions. Also in the mix, 7th grader Henry Kopf placed 5th along with Jonathan Williams who also placed fifth overall! Congratulations to Coaches Moore, Rokuskie, Speno, Citineni and Atieh as well as all the wrestlers on a terrific season!

Anjali Velu (’18) has earned the Gold Award, the highest accolade awarded to a Girl Scout.
Velu worked in conjunction with NCTRC (North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center) for over a year to develop outreach programs and workshops that showcased the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with special needs and veterans coping with PTSD or other disorders.

Senior Trey Murphy has been selected to play in the 2018 North Carolina Private School All-Star game, featuring 14 players who have signed scholarships to play Division I basketball next season. Murphy has signed to play for Rice. The game will take place March 3 at Providence Day School.

Cary Academy extends a warm welcome to a visiting exchange group from Henan Experimental High School, our sister school in Zhengzhou, China. The group of 16 students and one teacher arrived in Cary on February 9th for the start of the 12th exchange between our two schools. Head of School Mike Ehrhardt greeted the group with a brief reception on Monday morning in the Administration building lobby. The visiting students will participate in a variety of activities during their time at CA, all organized by exchange coordinator Trish Yu. The program includes class visits and tours of downtown Raleigh, Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. Our friends from China will be with us until Feb. 15th, and then will go on to visit Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City before flying back to China. Cary Academy students will return the visit to Zhengzhou in late May/early June as part of our world language exchange program.

The boys and girls swim teams repeated as TISAC champs.
For the girls, it was their fourth consecutive title. The Medley Relay team consisting of Nisma Said, Amy Chang, Charlotte Hook and Helen Chen set a school record and broke the TISAC Conference Meet Record set back in 2004 by Cardinal Gibbons. Helen Chen (50 Free), Charlotte Hook (100 Fly) and Isabella Barnette (100 Free) all won their individual events to go along with the Medley Relay team and the 200 Freestyle Relay (Amy Chang, Emma Zayas, Isabella Barnette and Charlotte Hook).
The boys title was their ninth in a row. The meet moved in CA's favor in the fourth event, the 50-yard Freestyle, where Josh Pullen, Will Newman and Constantin Zodl finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The CA boys would cruise to four individual champion titles (Pullen in the 50 Free, Ben Humphries 100 Free, Jack Todd 500 Free and Kevin Chen in the 100 Back). Additionally, Will Newman, Vincent Wang, Todd, Humphries and Pullen won the 200 Free and 400 Free relays.

Congratulations to the 36 US students who competed in the Science Olympiad Raleigh Regional. Our JV team medaled in eight events and the Varsity team earned 5th place and medaled in 12 events
