Yesterday, WRAL reporter Sarah Kreuger visited Cary Academy's campus to highlight two student-led efforts to support the broader community and bring an end to division and misunderstanding.

Congratulations to Ellie McMahon ’21 for earning the Girl Scouts of America’s prestigious Gold Award for her work promoting childhood literacy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gold Award is the highest accolade conferred by the Girl Scouts, awarded to fewer than seven percent of Girl Scouts whose work makes a sustainable change in their communities and around the world.

Earlier this month, Christina Polge (’22) was revealed as the winner of the North Carolina Poetry Society’s Sherry Pruitt Award, earning the top prize statewide amongst high school and undergraduate college students for her poem manifest destiny. The poem, written for the Upper School Crisis During Leadership program, paints a vivid and often heartbreaking portrait of the United States’ westward expansion.

On Sunday, March 28, dozens of Cary Academy parents and employees got a taste of Flex Day -- a new addition to CA’s schedule introduced in August 2020. Flex Day is a designated day each week when students are free to explore ideas, interests, and activities beyond the classroom.

On Friday, CA hosted a vaccine clinic on its campus. In addition to its faculty and staff, CA invited members of the Cary Police department, faculty and staff from thirteen Triangle-area schools, and other front-line workers.

The Middle School’s annual Ubuntu program is CA’s celebration of community that allows students to experience different cultures, food, work, and other topics through different lenses. This year, each Middle School grade attended virtual discussions with scholars, activists, and artists whose work serves to inspire us to think about ourselves, our roles in our communities, and our place in history.
