May 10, 2017

Five CA Upper School students will pitch their business ideas to two local companies in a sponsored Pitch Night on May 15.

The students – Mason Reece, Kennedy Byrd, Tori Borlase, Julian Sodano and Anjali Velu – are among 20 from eight different high schools who were nominated by District C for this event. District C is a nonprofit that prepares future leaders with the skills and mindsets needed to be competent contributors in the digital age.

The students have spent the last month solving real problems for Fleet Feet Sports and Fit For 90. On May 15, the students, in teams called C Squads, will pitch their solutions to management.

The event will run from 6:30-8PM at Nash Hall, 108 S. Blount St., Raleigh.

Four win at NC Chinese speech contest

May 8, 2017

At the 8th Annual North Carolina Chinese Speech Contest Finals, which took place on April 29 at the NCSU Hunt Library, four CA students won awards. In addition, Cary Academy won the 2017 Chinese Speech Contest Excellent Organization Award.

The 10 finalists in the Advanced category, seven of which were from CA, were selected from more than 600 students in the state of North Carolina competing in three categories: memorized speech, impromptu speech and talent show. Only six finalists were selected and awarded a prize. The CA award winners are:

  • Alexandra Ellison, Speech Eloquence Award
  • Sasha Kostenko, Stage Charisma Award
  • Tyler Marshall, Best Talent Award
  • Luke Johnson, 3rd Place Award

Also, Robert Schellenberger won a Participation Award. Two of the seven finalists from CA couldn’t make it to the Speech Final due to sports event or sickness.

“Our students deserve the highest praise not only because they worked alone on their material, but they also competed against university students including the first-prize winner, a Ph.D. Chinese major,” said Chinese instructor Trish Yu.

Wrege is a Park scholar

May 3, 2017

Lindsay Wrege (’17) has accepted a Park Scholarship to North Carolina State University.

The Park Scholarships Class of 2021 – the 22nd class of Park Scholars – will comprise 39 scholars, selected from nearly 2,150 candidates from across North Carolina and the United States. The Selection Committee based its decisions on the candidates’ demonstrated accomplishments and potential in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character, as evidenced by their performance in interviews and assessments conducted by NC State faculty members and alumni.

Wrege has been awarded a four-year scholarship, currently valued at up to $107,000 for in-state students. The award covers tuition, fees, and room and board at NC State. As a Park Scholar, Wrege also will receive a generous stipend toward personal expenses and the purchase of a new computer. Park Scholars have access to enrichment grants to pursue research, service, or creative projects, and to alumni-funded travel grants for study abroad. In addition to these benefits, Park Scholars participate in retreats, field learning experiences, and civic engagement initiatives, as well as mentorships with some of NC State’s top faculty members.

With about 160 Park Scholars on campus and more than 800 alumni around the world, scholars are immediately connected to a supportive community of bright, service-minded leaders.
