Sixth-grade Spanish students attend Flamenco

March 23, 2018

Sixth graders learning Spanish at Cary Academy participated in a field trip on Monday, March 19, made possible by a grant from the PTAA. During this exciting day, students attended two performances by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet at the Clayton Center. The first show was an exciting exploration of Latin American Rhythms, and the second one featured Spanish Passion with a Flamenco Tablao. This field trip was a culmination of a Music Project Novice students have been working on during the Spanish class. After the performances, they enjoyed an authentic Mexican lunch in a local restaurant in Cary. Students had fun ordering and asking questions about the menu in Spanish.

Willkommen to visiting students

March 21, 2018

Cary Academy extends a warm “Willkommen” to a visiting exchange group from the Feldbergschule, our sister school in Oberursel, Germany (near Frankfurt).  Sixteen students and their teachers, Ms. Claudia Griesing and Ms. Mehtap Aslan, arrived in Cary on Saturday, March 17th, after spending three days in Washington D.C.  Head of School Mike Ehrhardt and Head of Upper School Heather Clarkson greeted the group with a brief reception on Monday morning in the Administration building lobby.  This year’s exchange, coordinated by Wendy Burgbacher, is the second between our two schools and receives support from the national German American Partnership Program (GAPP).  During their stay in Cary, the German students will visit regular classes with their CA partners, as well as participate in a series of special classes offered by volunteers from the CA faculty. The program also includes visits to downtown Raleigh and to Duke and UNC-CH, along with a trip to the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro. Our friends from the Feldbergschule will be with us until March 28th, and Cary Academy students will return the visit to Oberursel in late May/early June as part of our annual world language exchange program.

German students get hip hoppy

November 15, 2017

On October 23, 2017, the CA German program traveled to Broughton High School to see the German hip hop band "EinsHoch6" on their first US tour! They rocked the house full of NC students of German, and students were able to get selfies and autographs from the band following the concert. The band also conducted a workshop for German teachers last Saturday, where Frau Verhoeven learned to rap and Frau Burgbacher provided dance support. Many thanks to EinsHoch6, Deutsche Welle, and the American Association of Teachers of German for organizing and sponsoring the tour!!

Frau Verhoeven is interviewed by the Deutsche Welle media outlet, organizers of the EinsHoch6-Bandtagebuch project.

Four win at NC Chinese speech contest

May 8, 2017

At the 8th Annual North Carolina Chinese Speech Contest Finals, which took place on April 29 at the NCSU Hunt Library, four CA students won awards. In addition, Cary Academy won the 2017 Chinese Speech Contest Excellent Organization Award.

The 10 finalists in the Advanced category, seven of which were from CA, were selected from more than 600 students in the state of North Carolina competing in three categories: memorized speech, impromptu speech and talent show. Only six finalists were selected and awarded a prize. The CA award winners are:

  • Alexandra Ellison, Speech Eloquence Award
  • Sasha Kostenko, Stage Charisma Award
  • Tyler Marshall, Best Talent Award
  • Luke Johnson, 3rd Place Award

Also, Robert Schellenberger won a Participation Award. Two of the seven finalists from CA couldn’t make it to the Speech Final due to sports event or sickness.

“Our students deserve the highest praise not only because they worked alone on their material, but they also competed against university students including the first-prize winner, a Ph.D. Chinese major,” said Chinese instructor Trish Yu.
