Nair (’22) wins CA Geographic Bee

Congratulations to 8th grader Aryan Nair for winning the Cary Academy Geographic Bee! Aryan will now take a test to determine his eligibility for the state bee. The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2018 National Geographic Bee.

Maydew (’19) wins Scout award

January 8, 2018

Elizabeth Maydew (’19), a Cary Girl Scout and junior at CA, earned the Girl Scouts’ Gold Award for her “Culture Club” in support of refugee students at Athens Drive High School. She previously worked with ESL students and wanted to broaden this project to be applicable to refugees. Fewer than 6% of Scouts win the Gold Award annually.

Spector (’18) wins App Challenge

December 11, 2017

Senior Cole Spector has won the Congressional App Challenge for the NC-02 District. His app "Speech Timer" was developed in an ADV Topics class for computer programming at CA. 

The Congressional App Challenge will invite winners from across the country to showcase their apps to the Members of Congress and members of the tech community at #HouseOfCode, a reception on Capitol Hill to be held in April 2018. Their work is eligible to be featured for one year on the permanent display in the U.S. Capitol Building and on the House.gov website. Each winning student will also be awarded $250 in Amazon Web Service credits, generously donated by Amazon Web Services.

Alexander (’20) wins NextGen Pitch

October 27, 2017

Nate Alexander ('20) won the Hyperspace Ventures NextGen Pitch Competition on Oct 24. Nate won a first place prize of $1,000 for his Bubbyl medical phone case. The competition, open to all CA upper school students, was sponsored by Hyperspace Ventures and Taylor Meyer ('08). Eleven teams competed in the evening event, with second place going to Niki Vilas Boas ('20) and Becca Segal ('20) for their Wotter swimwear line and third place going to Mila Patel ('21) for her pre-imaging microchip idea. Teams were judged by a panel of local entrepreneurs.

Nair (’22) Geo Bowl regional champ

October 24, 2017

Aryan Nair (’22) competed in the Let Explore Africa (LEA) Geography Quiz Bowl at NC State University on October 21, 2017.

Nair won the Geo Quiz Bowl on Africa in the division among 8th-12th graders from different schools across the region by a huge margin. He had 77 points after the final round, and the second place winner had 32 points.

Nair will now compete in the NC State championship at Duke University in November.

18 named to Honors Band

October 17, 2017

Congratulations to the 18 students named to the NCAIS Honor Band. The large concert band is comprised of the most talented 6th-12th grade concert band musicians from the NC Association of Independent Schools. Students are nominated by their band director and selected by a committee of participating directors. 

The 2017 NCAIS Honor Bands include over 170  students from 24 independent schools, conducted by Dr. Evan Feldman and Dr. Arris Golden from UNC-CH.

14 CA students named National Merit semifinalists

Nearly 30% of the Cary Academy Class of 2018 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program this year.

National Merit Semifinalists
CA has 14 National Merit semifinalists. They are:

Semifinalists were chosen based on their performance on the 2016 Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The nationwide pool represents less than one percent of all US high school seniors and includes the highest scores in each state. North Carolina had 495 semifinalists.

Geyer and Thomas in Cary Magazine

Reese Geyer (’18) and Riya Thomas (’18) were featured in the July issue of Cary Magazine for their efforts to combat human trafficking in Nepal. They brought with them five bags of supplies and money for school supplies and food. Read the full story here.
